Friday evening at Oxbow

Since it was a nice evening, and the weather forecast is not looking too good for the weekend, I thought I would check out Oxbow in the late afternoon/evening.  I have typically been there earlier in the day.

Green Heron in flight
I saw the usual suspects there, many great egrets, great blue heron and green heron.  I saw more green heron than I have in the past, probably a dozen or so.

They are much smaller than the great blue heron and the egrets, but seem a little braver.  the great egrets will fly as soon as they see you...makes getting good photos difficult - I would really need to set up a blind for them, although I have managed a few good shots.

eventually some people showed up to fish in the lake and that pretty much ended the bird activity.  I also saw a ruby throated hummingbird, but it flew off before I could get a shot of it.  That is the first hummingbird I have seen there.

The kingfishers were back to fishing as well - they are fascinating to watch as they fly over the pond and stop and just hover looking for fish.  When they see one, they dive straight down into the water.  Ove of these days I will capture the moment of the bird hitting the water...that is the goal anyway.

New Photography Blog

Welcome to my new blog. I have posted pictures before, but this will give me an opportunity to talk a little bit about the locations and subjects of my photos.

For example, this is a Belted Kingfisher that I was watching last Sunday at the Oxbow in Indiana. This is one of a pair that was fishing...the kingfisher has spotted a fish and is just about to transition into a dive.

I shot this with a Canon 50D with a 300mm lens.
